A typical qualitative interpretation of the GATE SCORE, for example, can be as follows:
GATE Score Range Ability Level
800 to 1000 Outstanding
675 to 800 Excellent
550 to 675 Very good
425 to 550 Good
300 to 425 Above average
100 to 300 Average
Below 100 Below average

So you need to come under outstanding category as IIT and NIT are the best institutes and student have to get best score to get admission into it.

Getting admission in iit an nit for mtech courses done on the basis of GATE score.GATE graduate aptitude test for engg is conducted by iits every year.merit is made as per score achieved in gate lets take percentile.for iit it goes very neck to neck competition.in merit score between 100 to 98 percentile were eligible for iit and for nit goes upto 95.so prepare well so that u got good percentile.best of luck.

dear friend,

See this is a controversy question. Although it varies year to year.Generally two main factors are fully depend on this which are :

1. Number of students appeared in the stream in which you are appearing in.
2. Maximum marks obtained in a year by a candidate.

According two the factor your GATE score is evaluated. So especially there is no fixed marks to get chance in IITs and NITs.
Although I will tell you about this. According me it is 40 to 50 marks you have to get out of 100.
Besides this, Counseling is also a very important factor because if a candidate has scored well in GATE and the candidate did not get admission in this year as because he in 3rd year , so in this case a 4th year passed out student can take admission.

But don't worry if don't get chance in IITs then surely you will get chance NITs if you have a good score in GATE.

Good marks means out of 100 you have to get minimum 40 and above.

all the best.

Default Re: Required score in GATE Exam to get into IIT and NIT?

This is really a complicated question, because both GATE score as well as percentile are relative terms. These are measures of performance of a candidate in GATE based on the performance of other candidates appeared in the GATE exam. Before starting the details I recommend you to have a look at How to get into IITs for M.Tech, which will give you an idea of basic requirements for M.Tech in IITs.

I already wrote about how GATE percentile is calculated and also gave the details about it. GATE percentile represents a candidate’s performance compared to all the candidates appeared in that same paper in same year. Whereas, GATE score represents a candidate’s performance in comparison to all the candidates appeared in GATE exam since 2007.

GATE score and percentile change with the standard of GATE paper. If GATE paper is easy then most of the students get good Scores but the all India rank will be high too. If paper is tough then with less score one can get a very good all India rank. Please refer to a post based on one my readers comment about GATE score in 2009 and 2010 and its analysis.

Now comes the real question. How much GATE percentile or GATE Score is needed for M.Tech admission to IITs? The answer is simple. We need to find an absolute attribute to fix it and rephrase the question. A better question can beWhat should be the AIR (All India Rank) in GATE to get into IITs?

To answer this, let’s calculate the number of seats in IITs. According to my analysis, there are almost 50~60 seats in each department on average in IITs. And considering only old IITs take admissions for M.Tech, there will be 7X50 (350) seats for M.Tech in IITs for almost every department.

Now lets assume, few people go to jobs, study abroad and Govt. sector job we can increase it up to 500 AIR. Apart from this, few departments in IITs conduct their own test and interview for M.Tech admissions may allow students till 700 AIR to be a part of race to join IITs, but this too risky side and depends on chance.

Now we have an idea of how much rank we need get into IITs. As we are preparing for GATE we need to know how much marks we should manage to get into IITs. I already posted top marks in GATE 2010. Our average marks in test should be almost close to top marks and we can keep the buffer of 5 to 7 marks. It means we need to score something around but not less than (top marks – 7) marks.

Let’s summarize it,
Institute AIR Marks
IITs 700 Top marks – 7

This will help you set your targets and get ready for the big day. Take practice tests and solve previous year questions to get an idea where do you stand. If you are getting less scores put a little more extra effort. Just don’t give it. Believe me IITs are worth giving a hard try you will enjoy you success later. This is a part of GATE preparation guide, please refer to many other posts related to GATE preparation there.

dear friend,
My friend it is very difficult to predict the required score for getting admission in IIT and NIT...

It depends upon lots of factor like-

1.The cut-off marks
2.The difficulty of question
3.The number of students attempt the exam..

If you able to score above 50 marks then you will get a chance to take admission in IIT's...
So,you have to perform excellent in GATE exam, to get admission in IIT's and NIT's...

work hard and try your level best to do well...
You can take admission in coaching institutes to prepare for the exam...

All the best..

To get into the NIT's and IIT's, the required GATE score is more than 800.

Actually the GATE paper is of max marks of 1000. Out of that, if you score more than 800, or 850.. and get above 95 percentile, then its considered a good enough score to fetch you a seat in any one of the IIT's or NIT's.

Please focus on the percentile, as it may decide that you can get your choice of subject in the college you want to take up, or not.

All the best.

GATE Score=10{Ag+Sg[(m-a)/s]}

S0,friend according to the GATE score,

800 to 1000 treated as Outstanding

675 to 800 treated as Excellent

550 to 675 treated as Very good

425 to 550 treated as Good

300 to 425 treated as Above average

100 to 300 treated as Average

Below 100 treated as Below average

So,friend to get chance in IIT & NIT you have to score 800 to 1000 GATE score.Means 94 to 98 Percentile.

so friend study hard go as you wish.
