The appointment to Indian Police Services is done through Indian Civil Services
Examination conducted by UPSC every year. Basically there are two stages of the exam. Similar pattern are followed by state PCS too. The stage being the Preliminary Examination. It is also named as Civil Services Aptitude Test. The test is common for all the applicants. The CSAT comprises of questions from General studies(History, Geography, Politics, Economics and social development, General Science) English Mathematical Aptitude. The second stage is the Main Examination and Interview If you qualify the Preliminary examination then only you can appear the Main exam. On the basis of score in Main exam candidates are shortlisted for Interview. The total marks of Main exam and Interview are added to prepare final merit list. The Main exam includes following papers 1. Indian Language Qualifying Paper (300 marks) 2. English Qualifying Paper (300 marks) 3. General Essay type paper (200 marks) 4. General Studies (Paper-I & II 300 marks each) 5. Optional subject-I(Paper-I & II 300 marks each) 6. Optional subject-II(Paper-I&II 300 marks each) The subject for optional paper are as under. You can choose any two of them. The choice is completely yours. Agriculture Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science Anthropology Botany Chemistry Civil Engineering Commerce and Accountancy Economics Electrical Engineering Geography Geology History Law Management Mathematics Mechanical Engineering Medical Science Philosophy Physics Political Science and International Relations Psychology Public Administration Sociology Statistics Zoology There are few combination of optional subjects which are not allowed. Such combinations are - Political Science & International Relations and Public Administration; - Commerce & Accountancy and Management; - Anthropology and Sociology; - Mathematics and Statistics; - Agriculture and Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science. - Management and Public Administration; - Any two engineering subjects - Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science and Medical Science.
