There are two major ways to join Indian Air Force as a Pilot:

Combined Defense Service Examination (CDSE)

This examination is conducted by Union Public Service Commission and to be considered eligible for the same, one must possess a bachelors degree awarded by a recognized. Graduates in any discipline are considered eligible for Combined Defense Service Examination provided, one has studied Physics and Mathematics in the higher secondary level. The minimum eligible age for the same is 19 years and the maximum age limit is 23 years. The examination is held twice a year and the notification for the same is published on the official website of Union Public Service Commission.

Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT)

Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) is conducted by the Air Force Selection Board for recruitment of officers in all the major branches of Indian Air Force and in order to be considered eligible for the flying branch, one must have obtained a minimum of 60% marks in the bachelors degree examination and must have studied Physics and Mathematics in the 10+2 level. As far as age limit is concerned, the minimum eligible age to be considered eligible for the test is 19 years and the maximum age limit is 23 years. The Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) is conducted twice a year and the notification for the same is published in the month of June and December every year.

Age Limit:
19 to 23 years on the 1st of the month of commencement of the course.

Educational Qualification:
B.Sc. (Physics/Maths) 3 years or B.E. 4 years or B.Sc. (General) 3 years with Physics and Maths.
Should not have been suspended in Flying Training earlier.

Physical Eligibility:
For Male
(a) Height: 162.5 cms
(b) Leg Length: Not less than 99 cms and not more than 128 cms,
(c) Chest: fully expanded chest should not be less than 82 cms with 5 cms expansion.

For Female
(a) Height: 162.5 cms
(b) Leg Length: Between 99 cms and 120 cms.

There are 2 entry schemes through which you can apply for the Indian Air force as an officer after the completion of your graduation. But it should be note that if you have studied PCM up to 10+2 level then only you are eligible to apply for the pilot entry. The entries through which you can apply are Combined defence service examination and Air force common admission test. The details regarding the both entry schemes is given below:

Combined defence service examination
This examination is conducted by the UPSC twice in a year. To be eligible for this exam a candidate should be graduate in any discipline from the recognized university and have studied physics and maths at 10+2 if he is applying for this Flying branch.

Age Limit
Indian Military Academy 19-24 years
Air Force Academy 19-23 years
Naval Academy 19-22 years
Officers’ Training Academy 19-25 years


Air force common admission test
The AFACT examination is conducted by the Indian Air force twice in a year. For this examination a candidate should be graduate in any discipline from the recognized university. Those appeared in the final year examination are also eligible to apply for this examination.
Candidate applying for the flying branch should have studied physics and maths at 10+2 level.

Age Limit

FLYING BRANCH
19-23 YEARS

TECHNICAL BRANCH
18-27 YEARS

GROUND DUTY BRANCH
20-23 YEARS

Indian Air Force Pilot Exams Pattern


Tests consist of: Written Examination, [FONT=Arial]Physical Fitness[/FONT] Test (PFT) and Interview.
You will first be tested in English. Those who qualify in English will be tested in [FONT=Arial]Mathematics[/FONT] and Physics. After having successfully cleared this step, you will be required to undergo PFT consisting of 1.6 Km run to be completed in a maximum of eight minutes.
Candidates who complete the PFT in 7 min 30 sec or less will be awarded additional marks. You are advised to come prepared with [FONT=Arial]shorts and[/FONT] PT shoes for the test. Candidates who qualify in PFT will be interviewed. Candidates recommended in the interview will only be considered for [FONT=Arial]medical exam[/FONT].
After you have successfully cleared this step, candidates will be sent for a [FONT=Arial]medical examination[/FONT], which shall be conducted by a Medical Officer of the Armed Forces. If a candidate has successfully cleared the examination, he will be requested for to report to the Airmen Selection Center for [FONT=Arial]enrollment[/FONT].

After the enrollment formalities, he will be routed to Airmen Training School, Sambra (Belgaum) for 26 weeks of Joint Basic Phase Training (JBPT). Towards the end of this basic combatant training, candidates will undergo a Trade [FONT=Arial]Aptitude Test[/FONT] (TAT).
After that he will send to Dehradun, Varanasi and Mysore. At the Air Force Selection Boards, the candidate will undergo a number of psychological tests, an interview and group activities, which are collectively called the Officer Like Qualities (OLQ) Tests.

The Group Tests are interactive indoor and outdoor tests. The Interview involves a personal conversation with the Interviewing Officer. The test schedule is -

Day 1 INS-B/PABT*
Day 2 Psychological Test
Day 3 Group Tests
Day 4 Group Tests
Day 5 Interview
Day 6 Conference

Note- INS-B: Instrument Comprehension - B Tests, PABT: Pilot Aptitude Battery Tests

After the candidate is selected by the Selection Board, he would be sent to the Air Force Central Medical Establishment, New Delhi or the Institute of Aviation Medicine, Bangalore for a thorough medical examination. After that he will be sent for 72 weeks training at Air Force Academy.

Indian Air Force Pilot Exams

Career in Indian Air Force as a Pilot is very challenging and a rewarding one too. After selection, one is trained either as a Fighter Pilot, or a Helicopter Pilot, or a Transport Pilot and are a part of various peace and wartime missions.

As a graduate, you can enter into the Flying branch of Air Force through the Air Force Academy. It is one of the most prestigious training establishments of the Indian Air Force.

CDS stands for Combined Defence Service


If you are aspiring to join Indian Air Force then you have to apply for CDS exam and have to crack it with good score......

Eligibility and Criteria:



>> A candidate should have completed their graduation with atleast 50% from Recognized Universities

>> A Candidate must have Citizenship of INDIA.

Age Limit:


  • For Indian Military Academy : 19-24 Years
  • For Air Force Academy : 19-23 Years
  • For Naval Academy : 19-22 Years
  • For Officers’ Training Academy :19-25 Years.
