Airmen in Indian Air Force are selected after 12th class. Whereas, minimum qualification required for becoming an officer is graduation.

Airmen hence first have to complete their graduation. For further studies airmen have to apply to airforce only. Permission is given generally for evening classes or through corresspondence courses, But in a rare case recently one airmen cleared IIT JEE and was denied permission by Air Force but court intervened and directed the Air Force to give him study leave.

After completing the graduation airmen can apply for officers vacancies , which are for airmen only and are advertised in Air Force only.

Airmen can apply for that only. Airmen are sent for SSB interview, who are graduate and below 28 years of age. Once selected in SSB interview, airmen go for training to Air Force academy with other cadets, who have been selected through AFCAT examination. Airmen are eligible for only ground duty branches as per subject of their graduation , for eg. B Com graduates go for accounts branch .

However , Airmen selected through this process can not join flying branch.

There is another way to join as an officer for an airmen. Once airmen does his graduation , he can appear in AFCAT and CDSE exam , which are conducted by Air Force and UPSC respectively. Once selected , airmen have to go for SSB interview and get selected as an officer.

If airmen gets selected through AFCAT then he joins only in airforce as ground duty officer officer.

If he gets selected through CDSE then he will get Army, Navy or Airforce as per his merit. Airmen becoming officer in Airforce through CDSE is very rare because through CDSE officers are selected only for flying branch and for that airmen have to qualify additional skill test of PABT( Pilot aptitude battery test) and total vacancies are only 11 or 12 in all india competition.

Ps my father is currently serving as a Group Captain in the Indian Air Force and hence has in depth knowledge regarding these questions. I wrote this answer after receiving his inputs.
Do you have any question? or have anything to say?
