Dear friend,

It is generally said that one should start their preparation roughly one year before the preliminary exam.so if you add one year of exam process also then it may take up to two years to become an IAS officer.

so you should have a lot of patience and consistency to crack this exam.
As regarding the papers :
you have two papers in prelims
paper-1(general studies)
paper-2(aptitude test)

you have 9 papers in the mains:
general studies(paper1 and paper 2)
optional subject-1(paper1 and paper 2)
optional subject-2(paper1 and paper 2)
essay
language paper(qualifying nature)
english paper(qualifying nature)

after mains you have to appear in the personality test.

after mains you have to appear in the personality test.If you perform well in the personality test you may find place in the final list.

with this post iam attaching the syllabus of the preliminary exam for reference.

As far as the study material read newspapers,d.d.basu,datt and sundaram, modern history by bipin chandra, all the ncert and basic books for the preliminary level.

all the best
