Pharmacists are involved in the job of dispense injections, tablets, pills, powder, ointments, medicines as per the prescription provided by a medical practitioner and they are also engaged in compounding, mixing and preparation of medicines.
In India a number of educational programmes are offering with respect to pharmacy and one of the popular courses is Bachelor of Pharmacy or B. Pharm. This course is being offered by a number of colleges in India and these colleges should get approval from the Pharmacy Council of India to offer courses in Pharmacy. Eligibility to get admission to the B. Pharm Course:
Candidates who have completed their higher secondary examination in science stream with any of the following combination of subjects are permitted to take up Bachelor of Pharmacy course in most of the Government Polytechnic Colleges:
• Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics
• Physics, Chemistry, Biology
• Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics & Biology
Course duration and admission procedure:
The duration of Bachelor of Pharmacy course is four years and admission is offered to this course based on the marks secured by the students in the qualifying examination. Even some colleges conduct their own entrance examination and some colleges admit students based on their performance in the state-level entrance examination for this course.
Higher studies after B. Pharm:
On successful completion of Bachelor of Pharmacy course, candidates can take up Master of Pharmacy course, which is being offered with a number of specializations in a number of educational institutions in India. Some of these specializations are:
• Pharmacy Practice
• Pharmaceutical Chemistry
• Pharmaceutics
• Pharmacology
• Pharmacognosy
• Pharmaceutical engineering
• Biotechnology
Even though, all these courses might not be available in a single college, some colleges might offer a specialization, while the other college might offer some other specialization.
Career prospects after Bachelor of pharmacy:
Some of the career opportunities prevailing for B. Pharm graduates are:
• Finding a job in pharmaceutical industry
• Finding a job in research institutions
• Working with educational institutions as lecturer in the field of pharmacy, but for this, candidates must complete their PG course in pharmacy
• They can engage in activities pertaining to creation, formulation, manufacturing and distribution of new drugs by finding job opportunities in pharmaceutical companies engaged in these activities
• They can also run their own pharmacy/drug shops by registering themselves with State Pharmacy Council
