The District of Kanyakumari in the state of Tamil Nadu, which is also spelled as Kanniakumari and Kanniyakumari is the southern-most land area of the whole country. In the state of Tamil Nadu, there are 32 districts in total and this is the second smallest district among other districts in the state. The district is highly popular as a tourist destination not only in the state of Tamil Nadu, but also in the whole of India since it is the home for the popular city of Kanyakumari, which faces the Indian Ocean.

The administrative capital of the district is the city of Nagercoil, which is located at about 20 kms from the city of Kanyakumari. The district was previously functioning under the state of Kerala, before it was brought under the state of Tamil Nadu. Medical Colleges:

Kanyakumari Government Medical College, Asaripallam came into existence in the year 2003 and the college is offering medical education with affiliation from the Dr. MGR Medical University.  The medical council of India has approved the college to admit 100 students per year for the MBBS course, which extends to a period of five-and-half years. The other courses offered by the college are GNM, which is a nursing course and Diploma in Medical Lab Technology course, which is a paramedical course.

Government Ayurveda Medical College, Kottar came into existence in the year 2009 and the college offers Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medical Science course with affiliation from the Dr. MGR Medical University. This institution is approved with an intake capacity of 50 students per year for the BAMS Course offered. It is the only government ayurveda college in the state affiliated to the Dr. M.G.R. Medical Colleges.

Polytechnic College:

Government Polytechnic College, Nagercoil is approved by the Department of Technical Education of the Government of Tamil Nadu and the college recently celebrated its golden jubilee. Even though, the number of government colleges is lesser in the district a number of private colleges are functioning. There are nearly eight private engineering colleges in the district and a private medical college in the name of Sri Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences is also functioning in the district of kanyakumari. A number of private arts and science colleges are also functioning in the district with affiliation from the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, which is one of the best universities in the state of Tamil Nadu.
