The name of the district Lakhimpur is believed to have originated from the word ‘Lakshmi’, who is the goddess of prosperity and the main occupation of the district is agriculture. Paddy is the main agricultural crop in the district and paddy is locally called as Lakhimi and the term Pur in the name of the district indicates the meaning of ‘full’, thereby giving meaning to the district as a place full of paddy.

As per the name of the district, paddy is grown in abundance in Lakhimpur district and due to the fertility of soil in the district, paddies are growing without the use of any artificial manure. The district was reorganized on the 2nd of October 1971 with two sub-divisions namely North Lakhimpur and Dhemaji and later again it was reorganized in 1980 with two sub-divisions namely North Lakhimpur  and Dhakuakhana thereby leaving Dehemaji as a separate district.

Higher education in Lakhimpur District:

When it comes to higher education in Lakhimpur district, which is located in the state of Assam, there are 14 colleges in the district and the number denotes both government and private colleges put together. Of these 14 colleges some are running under the control of the Assam Government, while some colleges are functioning under private ownership. The names of government colleges alone with some details about the colleges are given below:

North Lakhimpur College:

North Lakhimpur College is an oldest institution in the state of Assam that was established in the year 1952. The institution has been identified as an institution with potential for excellence and it recently earned re-accreditation with A grade status by the NAAC. The college offers honors courses in almost all customary  subjects in the faculty of arts and science with accreditation from the Dibrugarh University.

Lakhimpur Commerce College:

This college came into existence in the year 1972 and it is also affiliated to the Dibrugarh University and the college offers degree in commerce and arts, PG in commerce, vocational subjects in B. Com Computer applications, tax procedure and practice, etc… and it also acts as a study centre for IGNOU thereby offering a number of courses.

Lakhimpur Girls College:

Lakshimpur Girls College came into existence in the year 1972 for offering pre-university classes to women students and later on the college earned permission from the Government of Assam for offering degree courses with affiliation from the Dibrugarh University. The courses offered by the college are classified under different categories like music course, self-financing courses, career-oriented courses, TDC Science course, TDC Arts course and Higher Secondary (Arts & Science) courses.

Lakhimpur PG Training College:

This college came into existence in the year 1976 and the college offers teacher education courses with affiliation from the Dibrugarh University.

Lakhimpur Post Graduate Centre:

As the name implies, it is PG institution established in the year 2002 for offering PG degree and diploma courses in arts, science, journalism and mass communication, business administration, computer application, etc… even UG courses are also offered by the college.
