Medical Laboratory Technology is a field that is also referred to as Clinical Laboratory Science and it is an allied health profession, which deals with the identification, treatment and prevention of diseases with the help of medical lab tests. These lab tests are of great use to the physicians in identifying and treating diseases.

This allied health profession plays a crucial role in the collection of required information, documentation, reporting, testing and sampling of these investigations. Professionals in this field identify the presence, extent or absence of diseases and offer information required for evaluating the effectiveness of treatment.

Medical Lab Technology as a career:

When it comes to career in the field of medical lab technology, there are two levels of professionals involved, one being medical lab technicians and other being medical lab technologists. Normally medical lab technicians do normal lab tests manually according to the instructions and they work under medical lab technologists. They prepare specimens and operate machines that analyze samples and they also do other works like maintenance, cleaning and setting up of lab equipment. They also prepare solutions needed for the lab by mixing correct amount of chemicals.

On the other hand, medical lab technologists work in five main areas of lab, namely microbiology, immunology, hematology, clinical chemistry and blood banking. They work in the areas of study of human tissues and related fields. They also identify the correct blood types for transfusions in a wide collection of blood samples in a blood bank.

Government jobs in the field of medical lab technology:

Nowadays, many well-developed government hospitals are located in different parts of India either under central government or under state government for offering the best possible treatment to poor people at an affordable cost. Most of these government-run hospitals have their own laboratories and people from medical technology background are recruited for these laboratories attached to the government hospitals and government health centres. Therefore, medical lab technologists can find job placements in public sector health centres and hospitals.

Latest government job notification:

As mentioned earlier, medical lab technologists and medical lab technicians are appointed by government hospitals and health care departments of state governments in India. As such, the names of government organizations that recently recruited candidates for the field of medical lab technology are given below:

• Medical Lab Technician Grade 2 - Directorate of Health & Family Welfare of Government of Punjab

• Lab Assistant – Northern Railway

• Lab Technicians – Employees’ State Insurance Corporation

• Medical Lab Technician (Pathology) – CSIR, India

• Lab Assistants – Central Government Health Scheme, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare

• Lab Technician – All India Institute of Medical Sciences

Educational Qualification:

To become a medical lab technician, candidates must have completed their Diploma in Medical Lab Technology or certificate course in medical lab technology from a recognized institution. To become a medical lab technologist, the minimum educational qualification requirement is that candidates must have completed their degree course in medical lab technology from a recognized university of institution. Normally, the duration of degree course is four years and candidates will have to undergo internship programme after completion of the degree course.
