Government College, Baramulla was actually established in the year 1905 as an English medium school and later in the year 1913, it was upgraded as a high school and slowly it got the status of intermediate college in the year 1938 and the status of degree college in the year 1943. Initially, the college was working under the jurisdiction of Punjab University and then after 1954 to the University of Jammu and Kashmir. During its educational journey, the college was closed between 1947 and 1954 and later in the year 1963, the college was taken over the by Government.

Eligibility for admission:

Both men and women candidates, who have completed their higher secondary examination in either non-medical or medical subjects are eligible for admission to the courses in Functional English, Information technology and industrial fish & fisheries. For Mass Communication and video production, biotechnology, sociology, statistics, MCMP courses, men and women candidates who have completed their higher secondary examination in commerce/humanities/non-medical/medical stream can apply. For BCA course, only men students who have secured not less than 45% of marks in their higher secondary examination (40% for reserved category students) can apply.
