The University arose immediately after independence in the year 1948 by the state government for the purpose of conducting examinations with headquarters in Srinagar. In the year 1956, three postgraduate departments were established by the state government under this university and they are Geology and Economics departments at Jammu and English department at Srinagar.

It was only in the year 1956; the Kashmir University was started as full-fledged university even though it was established in the year 1948. The present campus of the university is called as Amar Singh Bagh and it is located in the city of Srinagar on the western side of Dal Lake. The university was awarded by A grade status by National Assessment and Accredidation Council. The university is spread over an area of 263 acres. University of Kashmir is offering education under different faculties like music and fine arts, engineering, dental surgery, medicine, law, commerce, education, social sciences, non-formal education, natural sciences, language and arts. Residential facilities are offered to the students, teaching and non-teaching by the university on first come first serve basis.

The university campus has separate hostels for boys and girls. The campus of the university includes separate library for each department and apart from these departmental libraries, there is also a central library known as Iqbal library, with internet facilities, vast collection of books, magazines and both national and international journals. Since the central library is easily accessible from all the department offices, it is helpful for the students, teacher and research scholars of the university.
