How to Prepare for Joint Admission Test to M. Sc (JAM)?

The JAM is an entrance exam conducted for candidate’s admission into Master of Science courses. This program is provided by participating departments of IIT. The Joint Admission Test to M. Sc is conducted by IIT in Delhi, Chennai, Guwahati, Kanpur, Roorkee and Kharagpur. Bachelor degree from the recognized university or board is a must.

Structure of the JAT for M.SC

There are total of eight papers in M. Sc Admission test and duration of each paper is two hours. The Biotechnology and MCA paper consists of objective type questions with multiple choices. The remaining six papers are from Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Geology and Geophysics and these papers consist of both subjective and objective type questions. Each multiple choice question carries four options and the candidate has to select the right answer from the given option. The candidates will be short listed based on these. There is a negative marking for each wrong answer.

Syllabus for JAT for M.SC

The syllabus of this entrance test is same as 12th and graduation level. The syllabus of the various subjects is given below.

  • Real analysis
  • Linear algebra
  • Integral Calculus
  • Sequences
  • Series and differential calculus
  • Numerical analysis
  • Complex analysis etc.

The chemistry subject covers the syllabus of

  • Physical chemistry
  • Organic and Inorganic chemistry

The physics subject covers the syllabus of

  • Kinetic theory
  • Waves and optics
  • Mechanics and general properties of matter
  • Electricity and Magnetism
  • Modern Physics
  • Oscillations
  • Solid State Physics
  • Devices and Electronics.

The Geology subject will get questions from

  • Geomorphology
  • Planet Earth
  • Structural Geology
  • Petrology
  • Economic Geology etc.

Reference Books for JAT for M.SC

They can refer to the 12th standard books and B.Sc books for this exam. Also refer to books by Anand Kumar under Unique Educational Publications, B.S GREWAL, R.S Agarwal etc.

Study Plan for JAT for M.SC

The candidate should allot time and study the portions clearly. They should practice mathematics problems. They should go through previous year question papers and model papers. They can find these model papers in online. They have to practice many mock tests. They should analyze their preparation level from time to time.
