IIT conducts an entrance exam known as Joint Admission Test (IIT JAM) for those students seeking admission to various M.Sc, M.Sc-PhD Dual degree, Joint M.Sc-PhD and other post-graduate M.Sc programs.

Admission Procedure Details:

*Once the candidate has qualified in the JAM test, he/she has to fulfill the eligibility criteria of the respective IIT

IIT Bombay / IIT Madras –degree of three years duration.

IIT Delhi – First Division in Bachelors degree (5% relaxation for SC / ST / PH candidates)

IIT Guwahati – A first class or minimum 55% marks or CGPA of 6.0 on a 10 point scale for General category candidates (50% marks or CGPA of 5.5 on a 10 point scale for SC / ST candidates) in the qualifying degree or equivalent.

IIT Kanpur – At least 55% aggregate marks or equivalent for General category candidates (50% marks or equivalent for SC / ST candidates) at the qualifying degree.

IIT Kharagpur – A pass in 10+2+3 degree or its equivalent.

IIT Roorkee – Candidates must have secured CGPA of 6.75 on a 10 point scale or 60% of aggregate marks in case they belong to general category and 6.25 CGPA or 55% in case they belong to SC/ST Category.

*Candidates appearing in the final examination of the qualifying degree are also eligible to appear in JAM in a given year.

*At the time of admission, all admitted candidates will have to submit a physical fitness certificate from a registered medical practitioner in the prescribed form

Pattern of IIT JAM:

Each Test paper will be of 3 hours duration.

A candidate can appear in either one or two Test Papers, subject to the restrictions imposed by the test schedule. Candidates should ensure that there is no clash of time schedule for the chosen test papers.

Test Papers for Biotechnology and Computer Applications will be fully Objective Type and are to be answered in an Objective Response Sheet (ORS), by darkening appropriate bubbles.

All other Test Papers will be Objective-cum-Subjective Type. In each of these six Test Papers, out of the total marks assigned to the Test Paper, objective and subjective questions will carry weight-age of 30% and 70%, respectively.

There will be negative marking for wrong answers to the Objective type questions in all Test Papers.

Eligibility for IIT JAM:

The candidates must have passed the Bachelor’s degree in the subject concerned or related subjects, in which they are seeking admission.

JAM qualified candidates must fulfill the following eligibility criteria for admissions in IITs:

Candidates must have secured at least 55% aggregate marks or equivalent grade (taking into account all subjects, including languages and subsidiaries in all years combined) in the qualifying degree.

There is a relaxation of 5% of marks in case of SC/ST/PD category candidates.
