Kolhan University, Chaibasa
In year 2007, Jharkhand state assembly passed Jharkhand state university Amendment bill to set up Kolhan university, Chaibasa, which eventually was established in year 2009 and within 5 months of its inception it was granted Association of Indian Universities post receiving accreditation from University Grants Commision, which is a prerequisite to become a member of Association of Indian Universities (AIU).At this point in time all colleges under Kolhan University are affiliated to UGC.
Kolhan University was set up with an initial cost estimate of Rs 35.13 cr.It is situated close to Jharkhand & Orissa border. It is also planning on opening a second campus in Steel city Tata Nagar and talks are underway.
The establishment of separate university in Kolhan area in the state is very much justified as the Kolhan area, comprising of West Singhbhum, East Singhbhum and Saraikela Kharsawan districts, are deprived of facilities of higher education and the University would be able to meet the demands of the area.The university also plans postgraduate department in tribal languages which would be a decisive tool spreading awareness and nurturing interest among tribal students of this belt and ultimately avoid high drop outs from locals. Father Benni Ekka vice- chancellor is chosen to lead this drive and make this university succeed in its mission.
Few of the known colleges affiliated with Kolhan University are Tata College and Mahila College in Chaibasa, ABM College, Jamshedpur Co-operative College and Jamshedpur Women’s College in Jamshedpur.
Kolhan University, Chaibasa plans to hold its First-year postgraduate exams and first-year undergraduate exams sometime in July also BEd exams scheduled to begin from July 12.
This year Kolhan University is not able to start with the semester system due to facilities (read still in nascent stage) inclusive of teaching force need a major fillip. However Semester system would begin from year 2011-2012.
