Andhra Pradesh Horticulture University was formed by the Andhra Pradesh State Government through a Government order dated 26th of June 2007 in the district of West Godavari. The university holds the pride of being the second Horticulture University in India. The state of Andhra Pradesh, which is already the second largest producer of total spices and fruits deserve a horticulture university for the purpose of further increasing the productivity, to maintain the productivity and for commercialization of horticulture in the state. The university started to function from the 26th of June 2007 and it is managed by the Principal Secretary to the state government and the Agricultural Production Commissioner. During the academic year 2007-08 three horticulture colleges one at Kadapa District, Mahaboobnagar District and West Godavari District were started by the university. During this year another college at Rajendranagar, which was working under Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University was also brought under the jurisdiction of this university. The list of colleges coming under the jurisdiction of this university is given below:

• College of Horticulture, Anantharajupet, Kadapa

• College of Horticulture, Mojerla, Mahaboobnagar

• College of Horticulture, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad

• College of Horticulture, Venkataramannagudem, West Godavari

The university constituted its board of management in the year 2008 on the 16th of February and the first Vice Chancellor was recruited on the 26th of February 2008. Subsequently, in the month of August in the same year, 2 polytechnics and 27 research stations dealing with Research and horticulture were brought under this university. The headquarters of Andhra Pradesh Horticulture University is located at Venkataramannagudem and it started functioning independently from the 10th of May 2008. The university is following the Land Grant Pattern followed by Universities in the USA with stress on extension, research and education in horticulture. Therefore, the work of the university is to conduct need-based research, to facilitate human resource development through education and dissemination of the proven technologies.
