The Central Agricultural University was established by an act of Parliament, which came into effect from the 26th of January 1993. The university was established with the notification issued by the Department of Agricultural Research and Education of Government of India. The university began to function on the 13th of September 1993 and its jurisdiction is spread over six north eastern hill states of India namely Tripura, Sikkim, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh with headquarters at Manila. The mission of the Central Agricultural University, Manipur is to become a centre of excellence in research, teaching and extension activities in agricultural and related fields. The aim of the university is to develop a farming system that can endure profitability and productivity in agricultural sector and the university also aims at providing training to the farmers in the north-eastern part of India about effective dissemination of agricultural technologies. The Central Agricultural University was established with the responsibilities of imparting education in agricultural and related fields as it deems fit, furthering the advancement of learning and conducting research in the field of agriculture and to undertake extension activities in the states coming under its jurisdiction. The university is currently offering six UG courses, eight PG courses in agriculture, three courses in animal husbandry and veterinary science and two courses in fisheries. The university is admitting students to the UG course on the basis of the nominations done by appropriate states of North-eastern region and VCI/ICAR and entrance examination conducted by them. For PG courses, admission is made on the basis of merit secured by the students in the qualifying examination.
