The district of Bishnupur is located in the state of Manipur and initially, the name of the district was Lumangdong and it was given this name from Lord Vishnu, when Manu Brahmins migrated to the state of Manipur under the patronage of the local king. There is also a Vishu Temple in the city of Bishnupur and it is protected historical monument according to the Archaeological Survey of India.

There is a town called Moirang in the district of Bishnupur and this is located just 45 kilometers from the state capital Imphal and this is an important place in the Indian history because the Indian National Army unfurled the flag of the country for the first time here in the year 1944.
