Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture & Technology holds the pride of being the earliest and first ever agricultural University in India. The university is also simply called as GBPUA&T and it was established on the 17th of November 1960 by Jawaharlal Nehru. Initially, the name of the university was UP Agricultural University and the university got its present name in the year 1972 in remembrance of the freedom fighter Mr. Govind Ballabh Pant.

The campus of the university is situated at Pantnagar in the state of Uttarakhand. In India, the university is considered as the forerunner of Green Revolution. In the initial years of its inception, the university was served by the faculty of Illinois in designing its extension system and education system and introducing effective research. Six to eight faculties from Illinois used to stay at the campus of the university and guided the university in getting a kick start in the education field.

Since GBPUA&T is a residential university, every student should compulsorily stay in the hostel other than the wards of employees of the university living in the same campus. Totally 23 hostels are functioning under the university, of which one is for working women, two hostels are for married couples and seven hostels are for girls.

The university has made great achievements in the field of agricultural research and has formed a number of new technologies to help out the farmers. The sole responsibility of the university is to develop the field of agriculture in the state of Uttarkhand and because of this it follows unique farm practices and agro-eco systems.

At present, more than 250 research projects are being carried out by the university in the field of agriculture. In addition to several facilities, the campus of the university also includes a library with a collection of nearly 3.7 lakh documents in fields like humanities, basic sciences, fisheries, home science, animal husbandry, veterinary sciences, agriculture and other related fields.
