Gurukul Kangri Vishvavidyalaya was established in the year 1902 on the 4th of March by Swami Shraddhanandaji with the main objective of reviving the ancient Gurukula education system of India. The university is located at a distance of about 200 km from the Delhi and 6 km from Hardwar on the banks of the river Ganges. The university was established for imparting education in modern sciences, Indian culture, Indian philosophy and Vedic literature.  The institution was given the status of Deemed University by the University Grants Commission in the year 1962 and this status was awarded to the institution for the distinguished services done by it towards the educational field. In the year 2002, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council have awarded the university with four-star status. The university celebrated the centenary year during the year 2002 and it has seen an exceptional growth over more than 100 years of its existence. The university is offering 17 postgraduate courses and 20 undergraduate courses in the different streams of education. It is also offering research facilities to the students leading to Ph. D in areas like management studies, computer science, microbiology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, environmental science, archaeology & ancient Indian history, culture, psychology, English, Hindi, philosophy, Sanskrit literature and Vedic literature. The university is an associate of Common Wealth Universities Association and Indian Universities Association and the degrees offered by it are approved by Government of India and University Grants Commission. A department called as Archaeological Museum is functioning under the university and it was established in the year 1962 with the objective of promoting research and teaching in archaeology, culture and Indian history.
