Maharaja Ganga Singh Univeristy, which was previously called as University of Bikaner is situated in the State of Rajasthan.  The university was formed in the year 2003 and its formation is regarded as one of the important milestones in the development of tertiary education in the state of Rajasthan. It strives to get a better understanding of the problems concerning the local region through research and teaching.

The university was allotted a land measuring 1127.07 bighas in a village named Shrah Nathania for the formation of campus to this university. The university aims at developing its campus in terms of infrastructural facilities and academic intake and as a resource and nucleus centre to develop the colleges coming under its jurisdication. The vision of the university is to take up under-graduate and post-graduate teaching, post-doctoral and doctoral researches, organization of sumposia and seminars, refresher courses to the teachers of the affiliated colleges, to prepare materials for teaching on the basis of latest insights and researches as contained in national and international journals, to develop high-tech labs, strong central library with equipment related to modern technology of education.

The university is also planning to introduce new courses in different disciplines of education. Different courses are presently offered by the university under different faculties like education, law, social science, arts, science and commerce & management. Law courses were started by the university in the academic year 2004-2005 and students were admitted for LL. B from this academic year.
