Mahatma Gandhi University was previously called as Gandhiji University and it was formed in the year 1983 on the 2nd of October. It is the fifth university in the State of Kerala situated in the southern most region of India. The university was accredited with B+ status by NAAC.

According to the Mahatma Gandhi University Act of 1985 passed by Kerala Legislature, the university provides development of higher education in Central part of the state of Kerala. The main campus of the university is situated at Athirampuzha, a rural community located about 133 kms from Kottayam town. Every year an average of 1.5 lakh students are joining in the university and it is offering different graduation and post-graduation courses. In addition to this, the university is also offering M. Phil and Ph.D courses as well. The university campus includes web-enabled central library and 21 departmental libraries. The library enables access to 4500 database and online journals since it is a member of UGC infonet digital library consortium.

In addition to the library centre, the university has also got centralized computer center. For the purpose of encouraging research, the university is having a dedicated intellectual properly facilitation centre. The university aims at succeeding the cause of higher education in India to meet the scholastic requirements of individuals, developmental needs of the community by creating crucial knowledge base.
