Mumbai University also called as University of Mumbai was formerly called as University of Bombay or Bombay University. It is one of the premier and oldest universities in India formed in the year 1857. The university is also one among the first three universities in India. Since the name of the city was changed from Bombay to Mumbai, the university’s name was also changed according to a notification by the Maharashtra Government dated 4th of September 1996.

The university has always given best contributions to the country as a whole and specifically to the Mumbai city by accepting an ever-growing load of opportunities and social values. Initially, the university focused only on controlling under-graduation level teaching and conducting examinations. The central library of the university called as Jawaharlal Nehru Library has more than 850000 encyclopedias, thesis and scientific journals and over 1200 rare manuscripts, 3000 microfilms, census records, IMF reports, etc…Also, the library is fully computerized and it contains books with behavioral and social sciences.
