Vikrama Simhapuri University was formed in the year 2008 mainly for the purpose of fulfilling the long-felt dream of the people of the district of Nellore in the State of Andhra Pradesh. The university initially functioned in the administrative building at Dargamitta and regular classes were undertaken at V.R. High School Campus in the district of Nellore. The new campus meant for the university is constructed at Kakutur in an area of 62 acres of land provided by the state government of Andhra Pradesh.

The government of Andhra Pradesh has passed a government order in the year 2010 on the 12th of April according to which all the colleges in the district of Potti Sriramulu Nellore that are presently under the jurisdiction of Sri Venkateswara University will be shifted under the jurisdiction of Vikrama Simhapuri University. So, at present only two colleges are under the jurisdiction of this university and they are as follows:

Of the above-mentioned two colleges, the university college offers post-graduation in M. Sc organic Chemistry, Marine biology and fisheries, social work and M. A in English, while the other college (i.e.) management college offers M.B.A and M.C.A courses. In addition to the above-mentioned courses in the affiliated colleges, the university is also providing Master of social work, which comes under Master of Arts.

The vision of Vikrama Simhapur University is to conduct research and to train and education students in areas of knowledge thereby contributing to the knowledge wealth of the nation. The university also visualizes to be in constant quest for excellence and quality in the field of higher education and to train the youth in the values of tolerance, humanism, secularism, reconstruction of humanity and ethical values as well. The university has designed its courses keeping in view the resources available in the region and the scope of development of the students as well.
