The full name of Avinashilingam University is Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women University and as the name implies, the university is meant exclusively for women candidates. The university came into existence in the year 1987 and it is acting as a deemed university from the year 2008. The university began its journey with Sri Avinashilingam Home Science College for Women under the auspices of the Avinashilingam Educational Trust in the year 1957 with just 45 students.
The Government of India declared Sri Avinashiligam Home Science College for Women and Sri Avinashilingam Teacher’s College for Women, which was established by the same educational trust as deemed university under section 3 of the UGC Act in the year 1988. These colleges were renamed as Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women and it was conferred the name of Avinashilingam Deemed University for Women on the 20th of February 2008.
Avinashilingam Deemed University is presently offering courses under various faculties like engineering, community education and entrepreneurship development, business administration, education, humanities, science and home science and each of these faculties of education has different departments under its control to offer various courses.
