Central University of Himachal Pradesh came into existence in the year 2009 on the 20th March and the university was established as a result of the policy of Government of India for establishment of central universities that does not have a central university. The university was established through an act of Parliament and the President of the nation is acting as the visitor of the university. According to the Central Universities Act, the jurisdiction of the Central University of Himachal Pradesh spreads over the whole state of Himachal Pradesh. The headquarters of the university is located in the Dharamshala District of the state of Himachal Pradesh and it has another campus at Dehra in the same district.
Central University of Himachal Pradesh is operating with the main objective of dissemination of knowledge by offering advanced education and research facilities as it deems fit. Different schools of education pertaining to fine arts & art education, journalism, mass communication & news media, tourism, travel & hospitality management, life sciences, physical and material sciences, education, earth & environmental sciences, humanities & languages, social sciences, mathematics, computer & information Sciences, business & management sciences are functioning under the Central University of Himachal Pradesh. Different departments are functioning under the university and the list of courses offered through these departments is given below:

In addition to different departments under each schools, Central University of Himachal Pradesh also has many centres under schools. According to the Central Universities Act 2009, each of the departments functioning under the university have a Board of Study and each school have a School Board. This board of study is responsible for taking decisions with respect to courses of studies, assignments of supervisors, appointment of examiners and judging the standard of teaching and research. The Central University of Himachal Pradesh is also planning to introduce several schools of education pertaining to physical education, sports and athletics, law & jurisprudence, medicine, etc…
