Manonmaniam Sundaranar University was started in 7th September 1990. The university is known in the name of Professor P. Sundaram Pillai who was a famous Tamil Scholar. It aims at encouraging human values for social agreement and providing quality education for students from all parts particularly rural area. The university offers various courses like B.A, M.A, P.G Diploma, M.Sc, M.Phil, M.Tech, M.E, Ph.D, M.B.A, M.Com, M.PEd, M.Ed, etc in different streams.

Structure of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Ph.D in Biotechnology Entrance Exam

The entrance exam for Ph.D in Biotechnology includes two papers – Paper I and Paper II. Paper I will be a general paper on research aptitude and teaching. It will consist of 50 objective type questions. Paper II also comprises of 50 objective type questions. The candidates can take a maximum of 60 minutes to complete each paper. Paper II exam will be held immediately after Paper I exam.

• Probability and Statistics: Mean, median, mode and standard deviation, Random variables, Correlation and regression analysis
• Numerical Methods: Solution of linear and nonlinear algebraic equations, Integration of trapezoidal and Simpson’s rule, Single and multistep methods for differential equations
• Microbiology: Microbial nutrition, Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell structure, Microbial metabolism (aerobic and anaerobic respiration, photosynthesis), Nitrogen fixation, growth and Control
• Biochemistry: Biomolecules and their conformation, Cell signaling and signal transduction, Biochemical and biophysical techniques for macromolecular analysis
• Molecular Biology and Genetics: Molecular structure of genes and chromosomes, DNA replication and control, Transcription and its control, Translational processes, Regulatory controls in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, Mendelian inheritance
• Process Biotechnology: Bioprocess technology for the production of cell biomass and primary or secondary metabolites, such as baker’s yeast, citric acid etc.
• Bioprocess Engineering: Kinetics of microbial growth, substrate utilization and product formation, Simple structured models, Sterilization of air and media
• Plant and Animal Biotechnology: Special features and organization of plant cells, Totipotency, Regeneration of plants, Plant products of industrial importance, Biochemistry of major metabolic pathways and products, Autotrophic and heterotrophic growth
• Characteristics of animal cells: Metabolism, regulation and nutritional requirements for mass cultivation of animal cell cultures, Kinetics of cell growth and product formation and effect of shear force, Product and substrate transport
• Immunology: The origin of immunology, Inherent immunity, Primary and secondary lymphoid organ, Antigen, B and T cells and Macrophages, Major histocompatibility complex (MHC), Humoral and cell mediated Immunity, Antigen processing and presentation
• Recombinant DNA Technology: Restriction and modification enzymes, plasmid, bacteriophage and other viral vectors, Expression of cloned gene, cosmids, yeast artificial chromosome, cDNA and genomic DNA library, Gene isolation, Gene cloning, Ti plasmid
• Bioinformatics: Major Bioinformatics resources, Sequence and structure databases, Sequence analysis, Genomics and Proteomics, Comparative genomics

Eligibility Criteria

The candidates have to complete their Master’s degree in the concerned subject to get admitted to the Ph.D course. They have to achieve a minimum of 50% marks in the qualifying exam. The candidates have to work as a JRF/non-stipendiary fellow/SRF/USRF/fellow in a research project or with stipend from any funding agency for the specified period.

How to Apply?

The application forms for the Ph.D entrance exam can be downloaded from the university website. To get the application form by post, the candidates have to send a request letter to the Registrar, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. Along with the requisition, they have to send a Demand Draft which is drawn in favor of the same address. The Demand Draft has to be payable at Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. The candidates have to pay a fee of Rs. 500/- to purchase the form.

How to fill the Form?

First of all, read the information brochure clearly. Complete the application without making any mistakes. The candidates should not leave any column vacant. They must write the name and address in block letters only. The date of birth of the candidate should be entered as given in the original certificates. Also, the candidate has to paste his/her photograph on the specified column and the ID card. Finally, send the completed application and the Demand Draft to the concerned destination. The filled application should reach the address in time.
