The National Institute of Technology abbreviated as NIT in Silchar was established in the year 1967. However it was earlier called as REC or the regional engineering college which gained its status to NIT in the year 2002. Surrounded by the beauty of nature, the campus extends over an area of 600 acres.

The institute provides excellent facilities for its students like Computer service centre, workshops, hospital, post office, bank and shopping centre, games and sports facilities, administrative facilities etc. All the computers aree connected through a Local area network with 2 Mbps Speed.

The institute takes admission in B. Tech. by taking into account the score of All India Engineering Entrance Examination conducted by CBSE in Delhi. Only students from Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Mizoram are eligible. Reservation of seats for SC candidates is 15 % of the total number of seats and those for ST candidates it is 7.5 % reservation quota.

The institute also offers M tech and PhD courses.

The library at NIT Silchar has more than 60,000 volumes of books available related to all the course offered at NIT.

There are various projects in the 3rd and 4th year for the students to gain a hand on experience with corporate world. NIT offers great and promising job possibilities to its students through various campus interviews with lots of popular good company recruiting its students from the campus itself. Few past recruiters of NIT Silchar include Infosys, Google, Accenture, Reliance Energy, HP etc. This NIT is ranked 8th among all the NITs present in India and 31st among all the engineering institutes in India.

Various engineering course offered include Computer science and engineering, Electronics and telecommunication, Electrical and electronics engineering, Mechanical engg. , Civil engg. The departments here includes department of physics, chemistry and mathematics apart from Department of Social Science and Humanities.
