Historically, Bihar is a state that acts as a major centre of learning and it is the home for the ancient universities like Vikramshila, Odantapura and Nalanda. However, the tradition of education in the state that had its origin from the period of Buddha or even earlier, was lost during the medieval period when these centers of learning is known to have been destroyed by the Muslim invaders.  Even though, the state faced an educational crises during the medieval period, the state has now developed as a centre for higher education with many universities under its purview.
