The Institute is a NIIT that makes it one of the best institutes in India. The Institute was founded by Dr. Jawahar lal Nehru in the year 1961 and since then it is working very hard to gain the reputation. The college was however was established in the year 1988 as a joint venture between state and centre.

The institute is spread over a large area of 222 acre with all modern facilities available inside the campus.

The institute has offered courses like civil engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering since 1961and is the first institute to offer computer science and engineering. The institute started offering post graduation programmes in the year 1970-1971. Recently newer programmes like chemical engineering & biotechnology are also introduced.

The various departments are applied mechanics, , chemistry, civil engineering, computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, electronics  and communication engineering, humanities and social science, management studies, mathematics, Mechanical engineering, Physics and GIS cell.

The institute also provides hostel facilities for its students. There are in total 7 hostels for boys and one hostel for girls which are equipped with modern facilities. The hostel for boys has a capacity of 1800 students and there is a separate hostel for post graduate students.

The admission to undergraduate courses is done through a all India entrance examination or AIEEE conducted by the central board of secondary education. The students have to clear the exam securing good ranks in order to get admission here.

The admission to Post-graduate courses for Master of computer applications is done as per the result of NIT MCA common entrance test or the NIMCET. The eligibility for the test is that the students must have a bachelor’s degree with at least 60% marks in that. For MBA the institute sees the score of CAT or the Common aptitude test. The reservation of seats for various courses is done on the basis of government norms.
