Allahabad University is the fourth oldest university in India and it was established in the year 1887 on the 23rd of September. It is an important central university situated at Allahabad.

Initially, the university was functioning under Calcutta University and it began to function as an examining and affiliating university for offering graduation and post-graduation degrees in different branches of learning with a classical orientation only after some years. In the year 1904, the university formed its own institutional doctoral research programs and teaching departments.

The first entrance examination was conducted by Allahabad University on March 1889. From the year 1904, the Indian Universities Act restricted the jurisdiction of the university to the provinces of Awadh and Agra and other central provinces like Mewar, Ajmer, Berar and some areas of Rajputana. Allahabad University has obtained considerable success in making corrections to the already existing courses so as to keep them in pace with the changing trends in learning, teaching, academic and research extension activities.

Five departments belonging to the university has been recognized as University Grants Commission departments of special assistance and two other departments namely archaeology & culture and Ancient history has been identified as University Grants Commission centres of Advanced studies. Other departments belonging to the faculty of science are covered by the FIST and COSIST programmes.

At present, a number of faculty members of the university are engaged in research projects and the university has already completed some research and development projects successfully.
