The degree in the field of mechanics has very huge demand; lots of areas are dependent on the graduates of this stream. The University is a great success for the last few years. The paper of Advanced Mechanics of solids is included in the 5th Semester of the Mechanical Engineering.

Paper Description

Mechanical Engineering students have to deal with design and operation of tools and machines. It uses the principles of material science and physics. For this learning mechanics of solids is very important. In advanced mechanics of solids students are taught elastic material behaviour, continuum mechanics which are very helpful in due course of study when they are taught structure of beams, bars, shells and plates.

Paper Pattern:

The paper of Advanced Mechanics of Solids is a conceptual one which holds a great importance in the practical field work. The paper contains 5 questions and every question has its alternative to choose which makes it comfortable for the candidates. The paper mainly contains numerical problems. Each question in the paper is of equal marks. Questions have 2 sub-questions in it which are of equal marks.  Numerical problems should be solved showing all the intermediate steps.

Questions that are asked frequently:

The paper of Advanced Mechanics of Solids is a compulsory paper which contains mostly contains numerical questions. Questions asked are such as on stress functions, stress functions in 2D problems, numerical problems on principle strain, Mohr’s cycle method, transformation equation, radial and tangential stress, components of strain, compatibility condition, numerical problems on stress and strains etc.

Total marks and time allotted

The Cochin University has fixed 100 marks for this paper and has fixed 3 hours time duration to complete the same. Each question asked in this particular paper is of 20 marks which is further divided into 2 sub-questions of equal marks.
