DOEACC B Level Course-Principle of Modeling & Simulation Papers

The subject of modeling and simulation is apply what you learn kind of thing. Everything one learns at one moment is used in an application in the next moment. It is a science which deals with the recreation of the actual physical processes in terms of mathematical formulations and equations. It helps to understand the different physical processes and the variables that are involved.

Importance of the paper

The DOEACC B Level Course-Principle of Modeling & Simulation Papers stresses mainly on the ability of the candidate in identifying the variables that influence the output of a certain physical process and with the half of the mathematical formulations derive a relationship between the input variable and the outcome obtained from the process. It also stresses on predicting the output of the process for a certain amount of fluctuation in the input variables. .

Format

Like other DOEACC papers, this paper also has 100 marks with different marks division for various questions.

Paper pattern

The paper consists of the seven questions of which the candidate needs to answer the first question which is compulsory whereas he is free to choose any four from the rest and answer them correctly.

Marking

The mandatory question has been given a weightage of 28 marks. This questions has 7 questions of 4 marks. The rest question holds 18 marks each.

Some questions from the question paper

The questions that most frequently feature in the question paper are

b) Name entities, attributes, activities, events and state variables for

i) Communication system

ii) Banking system

c) Every simulation must have a stopping time, which defines how long the simulation will run.  Discuss ways to stop a simulation.

d) One of the important steps in the development of a useful model of input data is to identify a probability distribution to represent the input process.  Discuss methods for selecting input distributions when data are available.

e) Let X and Y are independent exponential random variables with mean 1.  Explain how can you use Monte Carlo technique to estimate E[e XY ].

f) Consider the M/M/∞ queuing system with infinite number of servers.  In this queuing system every arriving customer is assigned to its own server of rate µ.  Therefore if there are n customers, the aggregate output rate is nµ.  Obtain equilibrium state probability and the mean queue size.

g) As an aid in the validation process, a three-step approach is widely followed

i) Build a model that has high face validity.

ii) Validate model assumptions.

iii) Compare the model input-output transformations to that for real systems.

Explain the above-mentioned steps.

Recommended books

The subject is new but still the most popular books are “Numerical methods for scientists and engineers by Hoffman” and “Numerical methods and process modeling by Chapra and Canale”.
