Indira Gandhi National Open University, Delhi
Indira Gandhi National Open University, commonly known as IGNOU, is a central and largest open university in the world. It was established in 1985 after the name of the former prime minister of India, Indira Gandhi. IGNOU has been majorly responsible in the process of establishment of DEC, that is, Distance Education Council and the standards of Distance Education in India. It aims at spreading knowledge and education through open and distance education.
Some of the significant features of IGNOU includes its flexibility in admission rules, national jurisdiction, flexibility in terms of place and duration of study, usage of latest technologies in education and communication, support to its students, modular programs, collaboration and intense networking with a number of other universities that are open to education.
IGNOU offers a number of courses for its students, namely, bachelor’s degree programs, master’s degree programs, PhD/ doctoral programs, diploma in post graduation and advance programs, certificate courses in post graduation, advance and professional programs, credit programs, non-credit programs and appreciation programs.
There are a number of divisions in the university namely, academic, administration, computer, electronic media, finance and accounts, international, library and documentation etc.
IGNOU has about 961 Study Centres in India. Its regional centres are spread all over the country. Three regional centres of Delhi are Delhi 1, Delhi 2 and Delhi 3 covering all the parts of Delhi and NCR. Regional centre Delhi 1 is located at MOHAN COOPERATIVE INDUSTRIAL ESTATE, MATHURA ROAD. Delhi 2 centre is at GANDHI SMRITI & DARSHAN SAMITI, RAJGHAT and Delhi 3 centre is at PALAM EXTENSION.
For admissions, IGNOU issues announcements. The candidates are required to purchase the respective forms, fill in their details and submit the forms. The registered candidates then appear for an entrance test, on the basis of which, the admissions are granted to them. IGNOU provides a “Round the Year Admission” facility under the scheme called “Walk-in-admission”. Candidates can collect the application forms at the Regional Centre/Study Centre, or can download the form from the university website. The necessary payments are to be made through demand drafts.
