The University was established in the year 1982. The University mainly deals with education and research needs of the area. Some research work is required in Jammu because of certain problems of the land and research on fruits, crops, vegetables, oilseeds, pulses, poultry, agriculture and livestock. The announcement for the university was made seeing these difficulties in the year of 1996, during the prime minister’s visit to the state. The University was dynamically involved in transferring the new technologies to the end user since the beginning. The University is supported by government by India and recently it received assistances in term of finance of Rs. 1 Crore.

The various academic programmes in the university includes Post-graduation in fourteen divisions in FVSc and in ten divisions of FOA, in Ph. D 30 research scholars, 25 seats for Master in Sciences in agriculture and 23 for VSc and PhD in 6 divisions of FVSc and AH and ten divisions of FOA.

The university has basically two faculties which are Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and animal Husbandry and the other is faculty of agriculture in Chatha. They have various stations for research which are spread across the state of Jammu. Various councils are the statuary bodies in the university include the Extension council, Research Council, Academic council, Board of Management and the university council.

The Vice chancellor of the University is assisted by several governances like the Comptroller, The Registrar, The Director Research, Project Planning and Monitoring Officer, The Director Extension Education and Director Resident Instructions.

The various requirements of the short term courses are that the student should be 10th pass,  and it offers 3 months courses in Propagation of Nursery Management of Fruits Crops, Seed Production Technology of Field Crops, Production and processing of saffron and kalazeera, spawn production and mushroom cultivation and poultry production and management.
