Engineering has many disciplines and Mechanical Engineering is one of them. The application of the principles of materials science and physics for the production, study, maintenance and design of mechanical systems is called as Mechanical engineering. Individuals who practice this are known as Mechanical Engineers. Candidates who finish their course in mechanical engineering can find jobs with both the private and the government sectors. Jobs are available for them in fields like electronics, chemical and automobile in addition to the technical departments of armed forces. The Space research organization also employs technicians from mechanical engineering background. Those who are interested in teaching can also find jobs as Lecturers. The remuneration of the candidates will differ according to the industry that employs them and their qualification. Students of mechanical engineering will get an initial salary of around Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 a month. Professionals in the field can earn as much as Rs 25,000 to Rs 40,000 each month.

Qualifying Exam

There are numerous universities and colleges across India that offers interested candidates with graduate as well as postgraduate courses in Mechanical Engineering. They are required to appear and pass in an entrance exam that is set by these universities. The basic qualification required for the candidates to write this exam is a pass in class 10+2.  They are chosen on the basis of their marks achieved in the final exams. Some of the examinations are: Indian Institute of Technology – Joint Entrance Exam (IIT-JEE), All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) and Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). Some universities also carry out their own exams in addition to other state level and national level exams.

Who is eligible to apply?

Candidates who aspire to become Mechanical engineers must be graduates. They must have taken Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry as subjects. After the bachelors course, candidates can go for the Masters course. In this course, they can specialize in production engineering, design and thermal engineering. A Post graduate degree is essential if the candidates desire to pursue teaching or research. Management positions are also available for candidates who have a degree in business administration.

How to prepare for exam and interview?

Candidates who wish to become mechanical engineers should have excellent skills in mechanical engineering. In addition to this, they should also have a proficiency in technical drawing as well as an expertise in computer for the designing and manufacture of machines as well as equipment. A good option for the candidates is to go for coaching or tuition in centres that teach the principles of mechanical engineering as well as offer practical classes. At the time of the interview, candidates must be confident when replying.
