The University was established by an Act forty one in the year 1997 of the legislature of Madhya Pradesh. The first academic programme was however launched in the year 1998. The new campus of National Law Institute University is under construction and will be equipped with all modern facilities and comforts. The campus manifests a miraculous blend of edifices with nature.

The University year is divided into three tri semesters, each having 70 working days and courses are conducted as per these semesters. The complete five year courses thus have 15 semesters in total and the course for each semester is given on the university website in detailed description. The University also aims at providing practical experiences in the field concerned and thus each student goes an internship and which is also included as a part of curriculum and the complete programme.

The University offers to its students a complete infrastructure equipped with modern facilities like AC rooms, a large library called as the NLIU library that supports all the semesters of the course offered in the university itself. The Library aids students with books, projects, journals, and many other digital resources that students require and get benefitted during the program. The University offers separate residential apartments for male and female students and these residences have facilities like laundry facility, hot and cold water etc are available 24×7. The Institute has Internet facility for connectivity with the outside world and more over the university campus has Wi-Fi facility i.e. inside the campus you can connect to the Internet using you laptops or hand held devices without the need of wire lined dedicated connections. Soon the Institute will have e learning and video conferencing also available.

To be eligible for BA-LLB course the candidates must have cleared the 12th or equivalent level and must have secured at least 50% marks in the exam.
