Cotton College came into existence in the year 1901 and it was named in honor of Sir Henry Stedman Cotton for appreciating his real concern for the cause of higher education in the local region. The college began its journey with five professors and 39 students and from being a small UG college, it has presently grown as PG institution with nearly 5000 students and 244 teachers at the present stage.
The college is offering education in the faculties of social science, humanities and science. Initially, the college was affiliated to the Calcutta University and after the establishment of Gauhati University in the year 1948, the college became a constituent unit of the university.

Placement Cell:
A group of senior teachers of Cotton College is running a placement cell and through this, several companies are invited to the campus of the college to conduct campus interviews and the recruit suitable candidates for their organizations. Some of the companies like Reliance Retail Limited, HCL, Wipro Technologies, HSBC Bank, South Indian Bank, Federal Bank, Tata Consultancy Services, CTS, SBI, etc…have recruited suitable talents of Cotton College to their organizations.
Admission Procedure:
For Bachelor of Science and Arts courses, candidates will be admitted on the basis of merit secured by the students in the appropriate major subject in which they are seeking admission. For this purpose, the college follows the practice of preparing merit list of students for each major subject with credit point as the criteria for selection.
For PG courses, admission is done based on the marks secured by the students in their UG examination keeping in view the reservation policy followed by the Assam Government.
How to apply:
Candidates can apply to the college by purchasing the application form from the office of college on payment of Rs. 150 towards the cost of application. This application form must be duly filled and should be submitted along with attested Xerox copy of the mark sheet of the qualifying examination.
