Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University came into existence in the year 2004  and it was inaugurated by the then President of India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. It is acting as a fully residential and highly technical university funded by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board set up in the year 1986 under an Act of the J & K State Legislature. The university also earns funds from the University Grants Commission.

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University is offering education through the different colleges functioning under it. Admissions of students to the UG engineering courses are done based on AIEEE score of students and on the basis of counseling. Admission to all PG courses offered by the university is done based on written test, interview and GD. The MBA and B. Tech courses offered by the university are approved by the All India Council of Technical Education. The students of the university experience a refreshingly and remarkably different teaching-learning process that goes beyond the mundane of education.
