Ministry of External Affairs is a foreign ministry in India and it is a government agency responsible for foreign relations in India. It is headquartered at the south block of the secretariat building at Raisina Hill in New Delhi. The ministry offers employment opportunities through the departments working under it and the names of departments working under the ministry are given below:

Recruitment of candidates for Indian Foreign Service working under the ministry of external affairs is done by the Union Public Service Commission.
Selection of candidates to IFS:
The officials for the Indian Foreign Service are selected by the Union Public Service Commission through a three-stage combined selection process called Civil Service Examination, which is an extremely competitive examination. The first stage of examination includes two objective type examinations one for general studies and another subject is left to the choice of the students. The second subject can be chosen from a long list of forty fields that include accountancy, Chinese literature, Medicine and civil engineering. The first stage is an eliminatory stage and it does not play any part in the final selection of candidates. Candidates succeeding in the first stage are called for the main examination and main examination includes nine papers. The main examination is conducted for 2000 marks, and there are two papers of general studies. After the main examination, there will be an interview, which is the final stage and this stage is for 300 marks.
Training for IFS:
Once a candidate get through all the stages of selection procedure, he/she is offered with comprehensive and multi-faceted training with a view to offer them a thorough grounding in diplomatic skills, diplomatic qualities and diplomatic knowledge. They are offered training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration located at Mussourie. The entire training is conducted for a period of 36 months and after a brief period of desk attachment in the Ministry of External Affairs, the candidate is posted in an Indian Mission Abroad.
