Rajiv Gandhi Technical University came into existence in the year 1998 and it was established through the M.P. Vidhan Sabha Act. The university is popularly called as Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya and it is forwarding towards development into a center of learning and excellence in the field of technical education, innovation and research. The university is offering education through affiliated colleges belonging to different streams of technical education like architecture colleges, MCA colleges, pharmacy colleges and engineering colleges. Even some polytechnic colleges are affiliated to this university.

Admission of students to the different UG Courses offered by the university is done based on the marks secured by the students in the higher secondary examination and on the basis of PEPT/AIEEE score. Admission of students to the UG and PG courses is done through centralized counseling by the department of Technical education of Madhya Pradesh Government and by the university. Admission to the PG courses is done based on GATE score or non-GATE merit score.  Admission to the diploma courses is done based on PPT marks secured by the students.

In addition to UG and PG courses, Rajiv Gandhi Technical University offers Ph. D course in different branches and for this course, admission is done, based on the performance of the students in the entrance examination conducted by the university itself.
