Is CET a real need?

Recently there was a proposed idea of introducing a Common Entrance test in case of students who aspire to enter in to the IT sector for jobs. With this test any students who wish to enter big IT firms can try their luck through CET conducted by the NASSCOM.

The real question is will this Common Entrance Test for IT jobs will reduce the position of the colleges in to mere coaching centers. This will provide them to be mere facilitators in this field.

Another aspect being the standardization of the selection or recruitment procedures in IT field. The Common Entrance test may widely open in the way for all the students who are not from the IT background, but still fascinated to join in this field with an opportunity. As in the case of banking sector, where in there are many opportunities popping up they have also come in with this idea of a Common entrance test. This will ensure that one get students from all the fields from technical as well as non technical background an opportunity to enter in to this field.

If they are able to break the conventions and engage in this field in a better way it will be an added advantage. The progress in the IT field is also going on in a smooth way that every one will tend to get interested to this area of business.

Scope of CET

Recently there was an announcement from the side of NASSCOM with regard to the possibility of introducing a Common Entrance Test for students who wish to join the various IT or ITES companies all over the country. This news brought in mixed reaction among the people.

Accordingly, the test will be conducted in to ways- a test for the engineering students who are involved in IT engineering, MCA, MSc Computer science and Software etc will have to attend in the NACTECH (NASSCOM Assessment Compliance Technology Test) and for the students who are from non – IT background they have to attend in the NAC (NASSCOM Assessment Compliance Test).

The general pattern of the test will be same of that of any other common entrance tests. The test will be of Objective type. The students are basically graded upon the basis of their performances. There will be no negative marking in case of this exam. The companies are always designing their training programmes in such a way that they can decide in which job they can put in a particular candidate.

In some cases there are students who are basically from the IT background, do not generally possess in all the basic or needed skills in a job , this test will erase this problem as the most competitive students may excel the others in terms of performance. The companies are in a plan to attract more investments and making the employees to understand the customer’s needs accurately.

Companies including HCL, Infosys, TCS, CTS, Wipro, Accenture, are among the IT companies who is participating in this test. The tests can be attended by students of any institutions, even the final year engineering graduates can also apply in.  The proposed test was introduced about 3 years ago, but it was not compulsory at that time.

The introduction of this system is seen as a step towards setting up a Bench mark and professionalizing the area, many others feel there is a need to look in to a bigger area. The main aspect regarding the CET is how this will affect the Teaching process in the colleges or Universities in general. The engineering colleges will soon be transformed in to like Coaching Centers where in their major role will be fading out.

Many experts in the industry feel that it is a wrong step in the sense it will lower the quality of the students who are passing out. If the students who are attending in the CET if they are not in a position to crack it, they will adjudged as unsuccessful and will not be given opportunities by any other companies.

It’s a highly bold step to standardize the process of recruitment but on the other hand it is the fact that for good opportunities for employment, everyone needs a good base which can only be provided by the teachers. The general need is about an efficient system of teaching so that it will be easy to produce good engineers in the country according to the changing needs of the market on a whole. There is a need for putting a standard on the Communication part which will be a problem for rural are students, hence effective methods should be introduced to improve their level and in a way they can also get in more opportunities.

Every system should be designed according to the general benefit of the student community. Hence students should make in more effort to grab in the positive side benefits of this system in general.
