Basically, Krishnadevaraya University was started as the Post-graduate centre of Sri Venkateswara University in 1968 and it gained autonomy status in the year 1976. After this, the autonomous postgraduate centre was given the status of university in the year 1981.

After gaining university status in the year 1981, the university acted as unitary residential university and it became affiliating university in the year 1987. Later in the year 1993, the post-graduate centre situated at Kurnool was amalgamated with Krishnadevaraya University. It has facility to undertake research and study through well-established laboratories and library. Students are offered facilities like internet, inflibnet, e-classroom, gymnasium, playgrounds and outdoor stadium to develop their overall personality. Sri Krishnadevaraya University has been awarded four star status by the NAAC and gained good name as a center for excellence in the field of education.
