Graphic Era University was previously called as Graphic Era Institute of Technology and the institution was conferred the status of deemed university for its educational excellence in management studies and engineering sciences. The university aims at developing the aptitude of the students through interactive sessions with regular brainstorming in group discussions with their mentors and exposure to a plethora of events. It was declared the status of deemed university under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act 1956 in the year 2008 and it is approved by the Ministry of Human Resource Development of Government of India.

For getting into the B. Tech courses offered by the Graphic Era University, candidates must have completed their higher secondary with PCM subjects, except for dual degree course in biotech and MBA, for which higher secondary with PCB should have been completed by the candidates. Admission to B. Tech courses is done based on AIEEE rank and for M. Tech courses, it is based on GATE score. For MBA full-time course, score of XAT/MAT/CAT is taken into consideration followed by GD and PI. For MCA, scores of UPTU-SEE/UTU-SEE are taken into consideration. For all other courses, admission is based on the merit secured by the students in the qualifying examination.
