Jorhat College came into existence in the year 1962 and the college is functioning with its motto as ‘Vidya Gurunang Guru’. The college is operating from an urban campus and it is offering courses wit affiliation from the Dibrugarh University. It is a public college and the college was previously functioning as two separate institutions namely Jorhat College and New Jorhat College. Both these colleges was formed in the year 1962 and the former college began its operations as a night college with the purpose of serving economically disadvantaged students, while the later was established as a day school. Both these colleges were brought together as a single college in the year 1970.

Bachelor of Arts:

Jorhat College follows medium of instruction as Assamese, however, students may receive required instruction in English and can also answer in English in any examination. This three-year degree course includes the following compulsory and core subjects:

• Compulsory Subjects:

o Environmental studies

o MIL (Hindi/Bengali/Assamese) of Alternative English

o English

• Core Subjects (candidates are permitted to choose any two of the following subjects)

o Education

o Philosophy

o Political science

o History

o Sociology

o Economics

In addition to the compulsory subject, a candidate offering major in any subject will have to choose another subject as core subject. Within 15 days from the commencement of regular classes, candidates will have to choose their subject combination and thereafter he/she will not be allowed to change the combination.

Admission procedure:

Candidates interested in apply to Jorhat College will have to apply with the help of prescribed form available for admission that can be obtained along with prospects and academic calendar from the college officer and same should be duly filled and submitted on or before the last date mentioned according to the notification issued by the college in its notice board and in the local newspaper. The general criteria followed by Jorhat College for admission of students to different courses is merit secured by the students in the qualifying examination. In the process of admission to the degree course, candidates with higher secondary from the same institution will be given preference.
