Statistics is a branch of mathematical science which mainly deals with analysis, interpretation and presentation of data. The field comprises of both applied as well as Mathematical Statistics. Bachelors of Arts (B.A) in Statistics and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Statistics are the two major undergraduate courses in Statistics which the candidates who are well versed in mathematical thinking can choose. The duration of both the courses is three years.

B.A in Statistics

Bachelors of Arts in Statistics course comprises of the study in the branch of applied mathematics. Here the candidates need to use the mathematical principles to conduct research and surveys. The topics under study include applied information economics, demography, data analysis, energy statistics, social statistics, business statistics, and so on. The course enables the aspirants to develop proficiency in statistical techniques and analysis. B.A Statistics graduates can get into various economic research institutes alike National Council for Applied Economic Research (NCAER). They can also work in various other organisations such as Data Survey Agencies, Planning Commission, Statistical and Economic Bureaus, etc.

B.Sc in Statistics

Bachelor of Science in Statistics course comprises of the study about the mathematical principles to be used in statistics. The core subjects included in the course are quantitative analysis, data interpretation, probability and distribution, statistical interference, sampling techniques, financial accounting, and so on. The candidates after their completion of graduation in B.Sc Statistics can work as Statisticians in various execution and planning organisations. They can also work in insurance sector, IT sector, banking sector, and so on.

Key Difference between B.A in Statistics and B.Sc in Statistics

B.A in Statistics programme focuses more on Applied Statistics and its associated fields. The course gives emphasis to Economics. On the other hand, B.Sc in Statistics programme gives more importance to Mathematical Statistics and computer based statistical methods. Although both the courses deal on same subject, each one handles diverse areas in the subject matter.

Which course is better?

B.A in Statistics and B.Sc in Statistics, both the courses have its own merit. In general, a Bachelor of Arts degree focuses on moderate general topics whereas a Bachelor of Science degree concentrates on more science and mathematics subjects. One degree is not necessarily better than the other, but some of the experts convince that B.Sc in Statistics is better by showing that it has greater flexibility and more opportunities. However, it is more significant to choose a degree that is appropriate to the candidates’ interests, needs, talent, and professional goals.
