CTET consists of two papers. Paper I is designed for those aspiring to teach students studying is 1st to 5th standard. Candidates aspiring to teach in classes’ 6th to 8th standard need to appear for Paper II. Candidates can opt to appear for both the paper if they desire to. There are 150 questions in each paper with 1 mark for each correct answer. There is no negative marking. Candidates are assessed in areas like Child Development and Pedagogy, Language I, Language II, Mathematics, Environmental Studies, Social Studies.

Structure of CTET

The structure for the both Paper I and Paper II is as follows:

• Multiple choice questions with 4 alternatives
• Each question carries 1 mark
• 150 questions in each paper
• No negative marking

Content for Paper I

Paper I will cover areas like

• Child Development and Pedagogy – Questions will focus on education psychology for children of age group 6-11 years. Various methods to quality teaching are focused upon.
• Language I- The medium of instruction is emphasised upon.
• Language II- Candidate will need to select a language different from that selected as Language I. The same can be selected from the list of language options. The communication and comprehension abilities will be assessed.
• Mathematics - Concepts, problem solving abilities and pedagogical understanding of the subject is key area of assessment.
• Environmental Studies – Conceptual and pedagogical understanding of the subject is assessed.

Candidates can refer NCERT books to prepare for this exam. There will 30 questions from each of these areas.

Content for Paper II

• Child Development and Pedagogy – The candidates will be assessed on areas related to education psychology for children of age group 11-14 years. The candidates should prepare in areas like qualities of a good trainer, interaction with students, psychology of learners etc.
• Language I- The competency in the medium of instruction is assessed.
• Language II- Areas like communication and comprehension abilities are assessed. Language selected for this paper should be different from that selected as Language I.

There will be 30 questions from each of these areas. Other than the above mentioned areas the candidate can choose between Mathematics and Science or Social Studies/Social Science. The questions will be from areas like concepts, problem solving ability and pedagogical understanding of the subject. There will 30 questions from Mathematics and Science each for candidates opting for the same. Candidates opting for Social Science will need to attempt 60 questions. The level of the questions will be from 6th to 8th standard.
