Environmental science is branch of science that deals with the study of the environment. It incorporates different fields of science such as physical and biological sciences. Contributing fields include biology, ecology, chemistry, physics, soil sciences etc. Environmental science is also concerned with solving environmental and related problems.

Current scenario

The fast rate of industrialization and modernization led to the deterioration of the environment. As a result of this, climate change has become reality. This has disturbed the balance of the nature giving rise to green house effect and global warming. With the increased awareness of environmental issues and its impact, people have started to think about protecting our natural environment. This has increased the importance of environmental science as a discipline.

Lately there has been an increased awareness in the international and national levels to protect our environment without affecting the developmental process. International agencies such as the United Nations and different national governments have brought out rules and regulations for the industries and companies to adopt environment friendly processes to reduce their impact on the environment. Research agencies have taken up the task of developing new technologies and processes for the common benefit of mankind.

After B.Sc in environment science

After completing the bachelors in environmental science the student can enroll for higher education. A student who has completed a three year B.Sc course in environmental science can pursue Master degree, i.e., M.Sc in Environmental Science. The duration of the course is two years. Certain institutes offer two year M.Tech in Environmental Science for which B.Tech or B.E students is eligible. Students can pursue M.Phil and PhD courses as well.

The career options for Environmental Science graduates are many. They can work with government organizations or private organizations. The government departments include Pollution Control Boards (PCB), Forest departments, Agriculture department and water authorities department. Private organizations also require graduates in environmental science to improve production process and develop methods. Environmental scientists are employed in fertilizer companies, oil refineries, mines, food processing industry, etc. as the need for improved processes has increased there is an increased need for environmental scientist in the research field.

Remuneration for Environmental scientist

Environmental scientist working with the government departments earn between Rs12,000 and Rs 18,000 per month. Environmental engineers earn up to Rs 30,000 per month. For postgraduate holders the salary goes up to Rs 50,000 per month and for those with doctorate it goes up to Rs 75,000 per month.
