Archeologist - How to become an Archeologist?
Archeology is the method for gaining knowledge about the history of civilizations. Those who are involved in this study of archaeological discoveries are called as Archaeologists. The Archaeologist does a lot of research which includes preliminary fieldwork, excavation of sites and periodical classification of them and the dating and interpretation of the materials. The findings thus got are preserved and maintained for present and future learning. Modern archaeology has enhanced the accuracy of their work with scientific techniques like carbon dating of artifacts and DNA analysis. Archaeology is a gratifying and demanding career opportunity for those who have an investigative mind and an intense desire to know the past. Being a multidisciplinary science, it draws help from many topics like anthropology, history, geography, geology, chemistry, art and literature. It also comprises of a large number of sub- disciplines and specialized fields like Numismatics, Epigraphy, Archives, Museology, Applied Sciences, Theory and Methods in Archaeology, Protohistory, Art, Chemical Preservation etc. After the completion of the basics of the course in Archaeological, aspirants can focus in any of these fields.
Qualifying Exam
Candidates who wish to join the Postgraduate courses in Archeology have to appear for the Postgraduate Entrance Tests (PET). The admission is based on the merit scored in the PET exam, the eligibility requirements and the availability of seats. Those candidates who complete the course successfully can find employment in the Archaeological Survey of India in its exploration, epigraphy, pre-history, excavation and in the branches of the museum too. For these jobs, the ASI diploma is a necessity. The Recruitment of candidates through exams is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and the State Public Service Commissions (SPSC).
Who is eligible to apply?
Candidates who wish to apply should have knowledge about the ancient history and culture. They must be graduates in History/Archaeology with a minimum of 50% marks in the qualifying exam. With the said qualification, candidates can apply for 1 year Diploma Course or a 2 year PG Diploma or Post graduation (MA/ M.Sc) in diverse fields of Archaeology. After the completion of theses courses, candidates can also go for higher studies or choose a job in the various private and public sectors in this field.
How to prepare for exam and interview
The fundamental qualities needed for an Archaeologist is an observant and inquisitive mind, keen observation, analytical and logical thinking. They must also possess creativity, accuracy and the ability to recognize and appreciate arts. The capacity to adapt to physical stress and strain is also needed as they may have to work outdoors from time to time in undesirable conditions. In addition to dedication, a lot of patience is essential since researches in this ground can take many years to complete. In order to conduct archaeological research, archaeologists need to be intimate with the Geo-physical conditions around them. The aspirant needs to prepare themselves with years of training, attending tests and examinations, writing term papers and thesis and conduct research continuously. To the other side of this, there will also be field work where the candidates shall learn to examine the excavation of places, analyzing the relics and monuments recovered, learn new techniques of excavation, intern with a senior Archaeologist, put into practice the using of GPS tools, digging and drawing & photography.
