CMS College Kottayam came into existence in the year 1817 and the college was initially affiliated to the Madras University. Later in the year 1937, the college was affiliated to the Travancore University and presently the college is offering different courses with affiliation form the Mahatma Gandhi University located at Kottayam. The NAAC has accredited the college with Five-star status and the UGC has recognized the institution as potential centre for excellence.

Library at CMS College, Kottayam:
The library at the college is functioning in fond remembrance of Rev. Richard Collins, who was working as the principal of the college from the year 1855-66. The library of the college has a large collection of books as compared to other libraries in the district of Kottayam. Recently, computerized automation process has been introduced in the library with a view to offer better service to the students and the staff members. The college library also offers photocopy facility to facilitate immediate printout of reference materials both to the students and staff members.
