National Council for Teacher Education was established as an advisory body for the Central and State Governments on all matters pertaning to the education of teachers. The Secretariat deaprtment of the council is in the Department of Teacher Education of the National Council of Educational Reasearch and Training. The major objective of the council is to maintain the standards in teacher education and also to prevent proliferation of substandard institutions for teacher education.
